The main objectives of the project were to create new jobs and increase the literacy of the population. Horsemen delivering books to the most inaccessible corners of this wild land were called book ladies. Mary Cussie Carter is one such lady. In any weather, she fearlessly goes mile after mile, striving to pass books to her readers. But Mary's path is much more difficult than that of her “colleagues”; it runs not only through impenetrable forests, but also through the jungle of human prejudices. She is too different from others; Mary is the last of her Blue People ancestry, and locals call her Cornflower, pronouncing it with contempt and disgust.
